A shop offering to buy gold items has opened to help people beat the credit crunch - in the upmarket suburb of Clifton Village.
Millennium II, in Portland Street, is owned by Andy Bush, a Bristol businessman who also runs the Gold Trader shop in Broadmead. www.goldtraderuk.com
Customers can take in items from broken earrings to chains and bracelets, which are priced on the spot and bought for cash.
Matt Thompson-Taylor, who manages the two shops, said: "People tend to be relatively well-off in Clifton, but everyone is being hit by the credit crunch, not just those living in the poorer areas of the city.
"We already had a shop there doing nothing, so we thought we would utilise it and help people get a bit more cash in their pockets.
"Millennium II buys in scrap gold, but anything that is a reasonable item we will try to sell on in our Broadmead branch."
Business at Millennium II, formerly a diamond jewellers, fell off after a robbery last July, in which diamonds worth £350,000 were stolen. Then the credit crunch bit and the shop closed for a while.
In its first week as a scrap gold merchant the shop has had just one customer but staff hope business will soon pick up.
Terri-Louise Bryan, 23, works in the new shop with her colleague Li Liu, 29, who has worked for Gold Trader for just over two years.
Miss Bryan said: "I am sure that as the credit crunch gets worse, there will be more people who are strapped for cash. We can help people to do the following; Sell My Gold, Sell My Gold in Bristol, Sell My Gold in Southwest, Cash My Gold in Bristol, Cash My Gold in Southwest, Cash My Gold, get Money for Gold or Scrap My Gold?
"Shops like ours provide a great way of releasing cash quickly, so that people can pay for things like school fees and holidays."
